With a writing credit on “Pray You Catch Me,” the first track off Beyonce’s Lemonade, Kevin Garrett’s writing and vocal skills are shockingly deep for a musician in his mid-20s. The R&B upstart tempers his crooning falsetto and svelte songplay with minimalist electronica and hip-hop production. Like James Blake, Garrett casts careening, warm vocals against icy production, creating gorgeous contrasts of sonic texture. With sophomore EP False Hope out as of last month, Garrett has been on tour and is currently venturing through the Midwest. Paste photographer Julia Drummond spent last Tuesday with the musician as he prepared for his show at The Music Hall of Williamsburg, playing a sold-out set and chatting with fans outside for hours.
