Late last month at the Mercury Lounge, Leif Vollebekk took a pause from his aching folk yarns to discuss his last NYC show, which was cancelled after selling a single ticket. “Is that one ticket holder here?” Vollebekk asked. Silence. “Thanks for buying tickets, everyone,” he continued to laughter from the sold-out crowd.
Vollebekk has been touring behind his third album, Twin Solitude, a sterling collection of weathered, soulful narratives laced in piano and guitar. At his Mercury Lounge gig, the Canadian troubadour complemented his own tracks with an improv’ed version of Neil Young’s “Cowgirl on the Sand.” Paste photographer Drew Reynolds spent some time with Vollebekk during soundcheck before capturing the soulful show.
Leif Vollebeck is currently playing through Europe and will return to North America in mid April. Check the video below for the artist’s performance of “All Night Sedans” at Paste Studio.
