The Staves made their New Orleans debut at Gasa Gasa on Friday, March 3. Emily Staveley-Taylor joked about their tour manager’s poor timing since they had just missed Mardi Gras. But one holiday’s end only signals another one’s start in this city, and the sisters discovered an early St. Patrick’s Day parade in the French Quarter. “Grown men will kiss you whether you want them to or not,” Emily said wryly.
The three sisters opened with “Blood I Bled” and moved through other tracks off their 2015 album If I Was, including “White Teeth” and “Black & White.” Their new single, “Tired as Fuck,” featured a heady jam, showing off the multi-instrumentalists’ talent at building emotional crescendos. Given the venue’s size, Emily, Jessica and Camilla opted not to walk offstage for their encore. Instead, they had a laugh by turning their backs to the room and squatting down while the crowd clamored for their “return” before spinning around to close the night out properly. The Staves are on tour in North America through June.
