New-wave legends Modern English have canceled their remaining spring Take Me To The Trees Tour dates due to a medical emergency involving guitarist Gary McDowell (pictured above, second from the left).
Though McDowell was able to play several recent shows at SXSW, including a Paste and Daytrotter session, he unfortunately had to undergo emergency surgery in L.A. on Friday, March 24. He will remain hospitalized for a few more days before returning home to England for additional treatment.
The band is upset, but acknowledge the cancellation is for the best. They released the following statement:
All of us, Gary especially, are very sorry to have to announce the sudden cancellation of our “Take Me To The Trees” U.S. and Canadian dates. This is due to a serious illness and urgent surgery required for our guitarist Gary. Obviously we are very upset and disappointed to have to come to this decision, but without Gary we can’t play any concerts. After recovering from surgery, Gary will be flown home to England for further treatment.
The British band added they hope to eventually reschedule the cancelled dates once McDowell is fully recovered—we’ll keep an ear out for more word on that. You can catch Paste’s SXSW session with Modern English below, and further down, find their canceled dates.
