Indie-rock outfit Palehound, a.k.a Ellen Kempner, has officially signed with Polyvinyl Record Co. to release an album later this summer. The announcement also comes with a small slew of spring tour dates along the East Coast, including a few with Big Thief—see the full list below.
Palehound first made a splash with her 2015 debut album Dry Food, which landed Kempner in the spotlight of Paste’s The Best of What’s Next series. Kempner’s sound has been compared to St. Vincent, Mac DeMarco and Pavement, putting Palehound solidly in the company of notable musicians. Despite sharing similarities with the styles of these other artists, Palehound somehow rises above the ranks with an unexpected freshness. Paste explains:
That’s what makes Palehound stand out in a sea of generic indie rock acts. Her music dances through gritty rock, gentle folk lines, and undeniably original melodies while skirting around forward metaphors or heavy-handed lines. There’s a sense of identity at its core, specifically that of someone who has grown up and can see the silver lining at long last.
“We could not be more psyched about making things official and bringing Palehound in to the PV family,” said Polyvinyl label manager Seth Hubbard in a statement. “Their new record is going to blow people away.” More news about that record—which fans can expect to hear “a sneak peek of” at Palehound’s upcoming shows—is said to be coming soon.
