Filmmaking for Marvel had become such a formulaic affair that when Guardians of the Galaxy graced screens in 2014 with its vibrant colors, brilliant one-liners and excellent choice of music, it was a true game-changer. And it really was the music that set the film apart, amassing a bunch of classic radio rock hits amidst the boilerplate Marvel score. It also led to an insanely popular physical release. Well, we finally have the tracklist for the Awesome Mix Vol. 2 and it’s just as exciting as we had hoped.
There are some really great tracks here, including “Mr. Blue Sky” by ELO, “My Sweet Lord” by George Harrison, “Surrender” by Cheap Trick and Fleetwood Mac’s most excellent “The Chain,” which was also heard in the trailer. Also, there are plenty of deep cuts here, and even an original track, “Guardian’s Inferno,” written by director James Gunn and performed by David Hasselhoff.
did a feature on each song’s importance to the film, and it’s pretty great, especially the part about how James Gunn showed each member of Fleetwood Mac how their song “The Chain” would be used in the film, with each of them giving their approval. How cool is that?
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 releases in theaters on May 5, while The Awesome Mix Vol. 2 releases this Friday, April 21. Check out the the full tracklist below (although you do so at your own risk, as Chris Pratt says you should wait), plus a 1975 Fleetwood Mac performance from the Paste Cloud, and watch the trailer featuring a most majestic usage of “The Chain” here.
