The Marvel Cinematic Universe has expanded yet again.
Cloak and Dagger, the forthcoming cable TV series based on the comics by Bill Mantlo and Ed Hannigan, has received a new trailer that fits the current, dark-and-gritty climate within the superhero genre (and the world in general). And yet, this show will be bringing some novelty as well, given that the aforementioned expansion of the MCU will occur not just with the introduction of new characters, but in several other respects, as well.
For one thing, will be airing on Freeform (formerly ABC Family), a network that has until now been untouched by Marvel (ABC, however, has been the home of Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and Marvel’s Agent Carter, and will house the forthcoming Marvel’s Inhumans). For another, the show will be featuring young adult heroes—played by actors that, mercifully, seem pretty close in age to the characters that they play—a shift in age demographic that, while not wholly original, hasn’t been as prominent on our screens in recent years.
No major plot details have been divulged yet, but based on a Variety report and the contents of the trailer, the 1—episode show will follow two teenagers from very different backgrounds who fall in love while discovering that they possess superpowers—Tandy/Dagger (Olivia Holt) can conjure daggers of light, while Tyrone/Cloak (Aubrey Joseph) can shroud others in darkness. Moreover, these two find that their powers work best together, a plot detail that, perhaps, functions as a metaphor for the mutual strengthening that relationships provide.
Cloak and Dagger was created by Joe Pokaski and is slated to premiere in 2018. Watch the full trailer above and stay tuned for any updates on the show’s release date.
