The soundtrack for the 2016 film Shangri-La Suite—about two unhinged lovers who trek across the country to kill Elvis Presley—may be more worth your time than the actual film. The soundtrack, curated by Mike Griffin and Mike Schanzlin, aka the Mondo Boys, jumps between upbeat, Elvis-style rock ‘n’ roll, elevator music, dreamy indie-pop, and Velvet Underground covers.
It also boasts a pretty impressive lineup. Father John Misty, for his part, contributed a faithful cover of The Velvet Underground’s “Who Loves the Sun,” from 1970’s Loaded, finally giving his fanbase something after those covers of Taylor Swift channeling Ryan Adams channeling Lou Reed got taken down. Jonathan Rado of Foxygen also jumped on for a cover of Loaded’s “I Found a Reason.”
Other noteworthy finds in the album include Burt Reynolds’ narration throughout and actress Emily Browning’s laid-back vocals on Griffin and Schanzlin’s original song “I Don’t Wanna Die.”
