It’s been just under two years since saxophonist Kamasi Washington unleashed his triple album debut The Epic onto the world. Now he’s returned with a new 14-minute single, “Truth,” and an accompanying short film directed by AG Rojas, both of which appear as part of Washington’s new piece Harmony of Difference, which is featured at the Whitney Museum for American Art in New York City for their biennial celebration.
The song is a monster of a track, never losing focus or meandering anywhere within its lengthy run time. While it incorporates electric guitar and vibraphone, new textures for Washington and his band, his knack for beautiful large-scale jazz orchestration is on full display, as is his instrumental ability on the fantastic sax solo that dominates the song for three minutes.
Kamasi will be releasing Harmony of Difference, which includes “Truth,” along with five interconnecting movements that precede it, as an EP this summer on the Young Turks label.
