Kendrick Lamar’s DAMN. has been out for exactly a week and in that time it’s dominated the pop culture conversation, become the highest-rated record of 2017 on Metacritic, earned gobs of streams (some estimates have come in around 200 million first-week) and now, DAMN. is on pace to be the fastest-selling album of 2017.
According to Billboard, Lamar’s fourth LP will likely debut at number one on the charts and sell somewhere between 530,000 and 550,000 equivalent album units, which would make it the fastest-selling album of the year.
The current holder of that crown is Drake’s More Life, which moved 505,000 units in the week following its March 18 release. Of course there’s been a sort-of hip-hop cold war between Drake and Lamar for sometime now, so Lamar passing Drake is another addition to that timeline of subliminal confrontation.
This would be Lamar’s third consecutive album to reach number one on the Billboard charts after untitled unmastered., To Pimp a Butterfly and good kid, m.A.A.d. city. The current projections for DAMN. would place it well ahead of all three albums, which sold 178,000 units in the first week, 363,000 in the first week and 241,000 units in the first week, respectively.
And if all of that isn’t enough, Kung-Fu Kenny said at an album signing yesterday (while live-streaming via Instagram) that he’s got more “new music coming.” So basically it’s Kendrick Lamar’s world, and we’re all living in it.
Lamar also debuted the video for “DNA.” this week and you can watch the excellent clip, starring Don Cheadle (the original Kung-Fu Kenny), below. Further down, find Kendrick’s Instagram-streamed new music tease, and read our DAMN. review here.
