Listen to Low Cut Connie's Cover of Prince's "Controversy" on the Anniversary of His Death

This spring, Philadelphia rockers Low Cut Connie will be releasing their fourth studio effort into the world with Dirty Pictures (Part 1). As they gear up for the record’s release, including the plotting of a lengthy U.S. tour, dates for which you can see below, the band also made sure to recognize the importance of today.

After all, today marks a year since the death of Prince, a loss that’s still reverberating through the music world. So to honor Prince’s legacy, Low Cut Connie have released their cover of his 1981 hit “Controversy,” which will also find its way onto the album. The group forego the funky synth and bass of Prince’s performance and replace it with a bit of rowdy swagger, not unlike something Spoon might do. The danceable groove is kept alive by a steady guitar strum, while barroom piano and jagged, bluesy lines from lead guitarist James Everhart give the performance a sort of rollicking fun, as though it’s being performed in a sweaty basement club.

Dirty Pictures (Part 1) is out May 19 via Contender Records. Check out the “Controversy” cover below, then watch Prince perform the song in all its original glory at a 1982 show at the Capitol Theatre and give a listen to Low Cut Connie’s 2014 Daytrotter Session, both available via the Paste Cloud.
