Marvel Bringing Squirrel Girl-Starring Comedy New Warriors to Freeform

Not only is Marvel finally breaking into the comedy space, but they’ll be including one of their most fan-requested characters: Squirrel Girl.

New Warriors just got a straight-to-series order on Freeform, the Disney-owned cable network formerly known as ABC Family, THR reports. Former Scrubs and Cougar Town writer and producer Kevin Biegel is close to a deal to write the pilot and serve as showrunner for the new program, which is planned to launch next year. New Warriors will debut with a 10-episode season centering around six young, super-powered people who are waist-deep in the awkward waters of adolescence.

The only character confirmed so far is Doreen Green, aka Squirrel Girl, a fan-favorite gifted with, you know, the powers of a squirrel. Here’s a rundown of her specific abilities, via Marvel.com:

Enhanced strength, speed, agility, and reflexes; small claws and enlarged incisors; retractable knuckle spike; semi-prehensile tail; empathic bond with squirrels, like Monkey Joe and Tippy Toe, can communicate with squirrels.

This isn’t the first Marvel show planned to hit the network, with drama Cloak and Dagger already set to come to the family-friendly channel next year. Marvel’s TV slate has been exponentially growing in general, with Netflix’s forthcoming The Defenders and FX’s renewal of Legion as a couple of recent examples.
