Under the moniker American Opera, Brooklyn-via-Michigan singer-songwriter John Bee has been making waves. Playing over 300 shows across the U.S. and Canada, both as a solo act and with a full band, Bee has performed at SXSW and the Vans Warped Tour in addition to playing shows with the likes of The Avett Brothers, Josh Ritter, Cursive, and Owen. Just a few months ago, American Opera shared some big news including a signing to Spartan Records and announcement of their debut album, Small Victories. Today fans can get a taste of what to expect off Small Victorieswith the newest single from American Opera, “Monsters Among Men.” Give the track a spin in the player above.
A track about getting older while trying to stay true to your younger self and finding light in the darkness, “Monsters Among Men” is a personal one to Bee. He shares, “I was raised in the church. Three things happened in my life that made me question everything I ever believed. My friend took his own life, my cousin’s life was taken from him, and the Sandy Hook shooting. I still don’t know what to believe. But I know what I want to believe.”
Small Victories is just that - a collection of moments that are both devastating and victorious, fragile and explosive, honest and hopeful. “The idea behind Small Victories is that the world is going to grow fists and start swinging at you, but you need to find reasons to get back up,” shares Bee. “Lyrically, there are common threads in the songs that explore heartbreak, hope, loss, religion, mental health, and more. Some of the songs are about failure...maybe if I sing them over and over, something will change?” With the engineering assistance of Matt Goldman (Underoath, Anberlin), the album was self-produced and almost fully-performed by Bee in Atlanta, resulting in eleven tracks that will connect with fans on a deeply emotional level.
American Opera will release their debut album, Small Victories, on June 30th via Spartan Records. Fans can pre-order the digital version of the album here and physical versions of the album here.
