For a name that implies struggle and a debut album (released last Friday) titled Routines, Hoops imply far more stress than can be found in their music. The Bloomington, Indiana quartet summons swaths of gauzy, tinsel-textured guitar, thumping ‘80s bass and underwater vocals (one of their standout tracks is actually called “Underwater Theme.”) Many chorus pedals fall under the feet of these midwestern audio dream weavers. Paste photographer Drew Reynolds spent the day with Hoops last month when they performed and recorded at Last.fm Studios in Manhattan. Hoops are on tour throughout North America through mid June.
