Sprung from the fertile minds of George Pelecanos and David Simon—who most recently collaborated on the massively acclaimed The Wire—comes HBO’s newest series The Deuce.
With a premise that seems perfectly tailored for the network, The Deuce will follow the legalization and subsequent rise of the porn industry in New York’s Times Square. The show will focus on the early 1970s through the mid-1980s. According to a press release, the show will focus on the “rough-and-tumble world at the pioneering moments of what would become the billion-dollar American sex industry.” Presumably, it will also focus intently on exposed female breasts. The eight-episode first season will star heavyweight actors James Franco and Maggie Gyllenhaal. The show will also star James Franco, as the actor portrays a set of twins.
There’s a lot of content crammed into the 26-second teaser, but no real reveals—exactly how a trailer should be, basically. What is apparent is just how attentive the show runners were to nailing the ‘70s blaxploitation vibe of the era. From Curtis Mayfield’s “Move On Up” to an abundance of afros and mustaches, there’s no mistaking this show for anything modern. It’s decidedly a period piece. Also in the teaser is a pool stick beatdown and some shady drug dealing, so you can be assured that the show won’t try to sanitize the porn industry, which is sort of gross when you write it out like that.
We look forward to more information on this exciting new show ahead of its Sept. 10 premiere. For now, check out the brief, but enthralling, teaser above, and find out where The Deuce landed on our list of one of Paste’s most anticipated new shows of 2017.
