We Americans like to claim the blues. After all, they originated in our churches and crossroads, in our deltas and our hills. They were popularized in our gritty cities and dankest clubs. But when those outside America take to this style—from the day The Rolling Stones began idolizing Muddy Waters until the present—they prove the universality of having, and singing, the blues.
Sweden’s Daniel Norgren is one of those modern disciples. Already recognized in his home country, he’s been making music for 10 years, with seven records to his name. But after a breakout performance at Pickathon and a recent member-exclusive compilation LP, Skogens Frukter, released through Vinyl Me, Please, Norgren is set to break out Stateside.
“Moonshine Got Me,” a track from Skogens Frukter, builds for nearly two minutes before reaching peak groove. The nearly nine-minute-long journey harkens back to the Hill Country Blues style of repetitive guitar blues that Junior Kimbrough perfected. Between the song’s leering melodies and creeping bass drum footsteps, it’s easy to get lost in his moonshine—whether pastoral or chemical.
Earlier this week, Norgren announced a month’s worth of U.S. tour dates. Check them out and take a listen to “Moonshine Got Me” below.
