Daily Dose: Mappe Of, “Nimbin”

Daily Dose is your daily source for the song you absolutely, positively need to hear every day. Curated by the Paste Music Team.

Previously, Tom Meikle has played in art rock band Common Age and composed experimental wanderings under the name Forest Moon. But for his latest project, Mappe Of, the Whitby, Ontario-based musician tries his hand at whatever could possibly be in the middle of the Venn diagram of folk and electronica.

Mappe Of sounds like the evolution of Justin Vernon’s pre-Bon Iver project with members of Megafaun and Field Report, called DeYarmond Edison. And on “Nimbin,” one of two songs released thus far, Meikle lays a foundation of acoustic guitar picking and strumming, later building upon it with warbling, synthesized vocal takes, horn interludes and bass drums that you can feel in your core. Lyrically, Meikle paints a pastoral picture about walking along mountainsides and screaming with the ocean before unleashing a greater truth in his fragile falsetto: “I’m alone, I’m alone, severed growth a mortal home / Vagabond won’t you carry on, vagabond won’t you carry on.”

Check out “Nimbin” below and look out for Mappe Of’s A Northern Star, A Perfect Stone , set for release on July 28 via Paper Bag Records.
