Easter Island broke up—sort of. A few weeks after the “break-up,” frontmen Ethan Payne and Ryan Monahan began writing and recording new material that would eventually become their latest record. In May, the band ended their hiatus and announced that record, their first new release since 2014. You can now watch the video for its lead single, “Island Nation,” exclusively at Paste, and see the band’s newly unveiled list of tour dates alongside Oak House.
The “Island Nation” video was shot in Japan and directed by Jacob Gee, a friend of the band. He says of the experience:
The circumstances surrounding this album and this song deal with so much ambiguity and isolation and lostness in my own life as a foreigner living in Japan. My Dad was dying an ocean away and Ethan had come to Japan to visit me. What dawned on me throughout this process was that I wasn’t so much chasing a story or a narrative to make sense of the fragmented pieces in my life but a memory, a moment in time that was enormously overwhelming and hard for me to revisit but, as nostalgia often has its way with us, somewhere I longed to be again and again.
