The next Spike Lee joint will be a reimagining of the very first.
30 years later, Spike Lee is adapting his feature film debut She’s Gotta Have It into a Netflix series to be released this Thanksgiving.
The ten-episode season will star DeWanda Wise as a 20-something struggling artist juggling three different relationships.
The 1986 film starring Lee and Tracy Camilla grossed over $7 million in the box office, establishing Lee as a filmmaker to watch out for, signaling a change in how black characters were portrayed and paving the way for more independent black cinema.
Lee directed all of the episodes, as well as producing them along with his wife Tonya Lewis. This marks Lee’s first endeavor helming a television series.
The cast also includes Hamilton’s Anthony Ramos, Cleo Anthony, Lyriq Bent, Chyna Layne, Margot Bingham and Joie Lee.
She’s Gotta Have It will be available on Netflix Nov. 23. Watch the teaser below.
