The Alternate Routes are no strangers to the music scene, in fact they formed over 10 years ago and have since made quite a name for themselves. Since inception, the Connecticut rockers have released several albums, toured extensively, performed on late night television (“The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson,” “Late Night with Conan O’Brien”), and have had their music featured in the 2014 Winter Olympics and NCIS. With an overall message that “we are how we treat each other, and nothing more,” The Alternate Routes take pride in all that they do and for the right reasons.
It’s been almost three years since The Alternate Routes have released new music, but today that has changed. We are thrilled to premiere the band’s lyric video for their brand new single, “Safe Haven.” The band’s guitarist, Eric Donnelly, shares with us the story behind the track. “”Safe Haven” is definitely a love song, but one that uses real life as its backdrop. Sitting down with someone you love and trying to convince them, and yourself, to keep pushing forward, to face your fears and stay strong is a sentiment that I hope many people can relate to. To me, it is a song about partners.”
Self-produced by The Alternate Routes’ Eric Donnelly, Kurt Leon, and Tim Warren, and mixed by Peter Katis (The National, Swell Season), the song is a departure from the band’s previous releases and showcases their maturity both lyrically and musically. "We've been digging deeper in all aspects of being musicians and songwriters,” shared Leon. “In this case, we were behind the drivers seat while recording and used the studio as an instrument. My priority was to have an arrangement, with modern elements, that served the lyrics, chords, and vocal harmonies. This also required a unique drum arrangement that was intentional, muscular, and in your face, but not a distraction. We learned that achieving good results is the culmination of many small details.”
