Bruce Campbell first dabbled in moviemaking with his high school friend Sam Raimi, who would go on to become a beloved director and Campbell’s frequent collaborator. They made Within the Woods, a 30-minute Super 8 film, to attract investment in a full-length follow-up, The Evil Dead (1981), which languished at the box office but earned unexpected critical support and eventually cult status—spawning sequels, a TV series, videogames and comic books, as well as steady work for Campbell. In 2008, the actor directed, starred in and co-produced a sendup of his surprising career in My Name is Bruce, of which LA Times critic Mark Olsen wrote, “Perhaps the best thing that can be said… is that Bruce Campbell has in fact appeared in worse movies”—a fair enough statement about a B-movie actor. But he’s also appeared in better movies too. Here are some of our favorites.
