What exactly is Spike Jonze up to? It would appear the director is working on a new project involving Frank Ocean and Brad Pitt. The Oscar winner was seen at FYF Fest in Los Angeles over the weekend filming parts of Ocean’s set, with Pitt also present.
Jonze has barely put out anything since his Oscar win for Best Original Screenplay in 2014 for Her. All the director has done since is Kanye West’s Only One music video, famously shot on an iPhone, and a bonkers short film with Margaret Qualley (The Leftovers) for the fashion house Kenzo. Jonze began his career making music videos for artists like Beastie Boys, Weezer and Sonic Youth, so a music project with Ocean feels likely. And Pitt is a dedicated Ocean fan, although his involvement only invites more speculation as to whether the project is a performance doc, music video or something else.
Audience members at FYF Fest captured Ocean’s performance of Close to You and some of the Jackson 5’s Never Can Say Goodbye on video while Jonze’s footage of Pitt was projected onto the screen. Pitt was also there in the flesh, sitting on the edge of the stage with a cellphone held up to his face for the entirety of the song before taking off with no acknowledgement of him ever sitting in.
Jonze was also reportedly spotted filming Ocean’s set at the Lovebox festival in London. Watch videos of Ocean and Pitt’s FYF Fest appearance below, and read our recap of the festival’s second day here.
