Dave Grohl Will Be "Amazed" If You Can Figure Out the Mystery Pop Star on the New Foo Fighters Album

As the Foo Fighters come closer to the Sept. 15 release of Concrete and Gold, Dave Grohl continues to dodge questions about the “mystery guest pop star” he teased in an interview with Radio 1. He let it slip that the star “sings backup on one of the heaviest songs on the record” and gave even more details in an interview with Rolling Stone today.

“It was sort of towards the end of the album and this person came up and said, ‘Man, I’d really love to sing on your record,’” Grohl said. “I looked at [producer] Greg [Kurstin] and said, ‘OK, come in tomorrow and we’ll figure something out.’ So we found a backup part for this person to sing and we decided we were gonna make it our own dirty little secret and see if anyone can figure it out.

He continued:

I’d be amazed if anyone can really figure it out. But it was great and this person’s been around a long time. And I think I’ve met this person maybe a few times, but I’d never spent time with this person, and we had a blast together. Really fucking fun. And [he or she is] very talented—more so than I ever knew. But, of course, I fucking ran my mouth off; now I have to answer to it every time I pick up the telephone and I’m like, ‘Fuck! I shouldn’t have said anything.

Many were speculating that Adele was the surprise guest, since her and Kurstin collaborated on her last record, 25. Grohl put that rumor to rest, clarifying that it is not Adele. He also shot down the idea that it’s Taylor Swift—thank goodness—but didn’t rule out Justin Timberlake or Lady Gaga, who both seem like good contestants.

As for us, we’ve narrowed it down to Gaga, Gaga and Gaga. She performed with Metallica at the Grammys, so she’s definitely got what it takes to stand out on a thrashing rock track. She also went from being mocked by anyone who wasn’t a young gay person to one of the most beloved and versatile people in music today.

We’ll be happy with whoever it is, even if it isn’t Gaga—but it’s totally Gaga. Check out the music video for the Foo Fighters’ “Run” here and a Foo Fighters performance from the Paste Cloud below.
