Americana/Country singer-songwriter Grant Maloy Smith tells stories with his songs. His video, "I Come From America" is one of the more upbeat, celebratory songs on this artist's latest release, Dust Bowl - American Stories. Smith tells heartfelt stories of real people in the midwest during America’s worst environmental (and economic) disaster in the 1930’s, including a song about how Native Americans were forced out of their homes. The album has already hit an impressive 12 Billboard charts, including Billboard’s Top Ten Americana/Folk album sales chart and Billboard’s Top 40 Country Album sales chart.
Smith's video, "I Come From America," is a toe-tapping tune that features the fiddle and a Dobro, a more rare American brand of resonator guitar first invented in the late 1920s. The song's insightful lyrics describe how being American is more than just where you're from -- it's who you are. The video displays stunning views of the Heartland as well as some heartbreaking historical photographs that show the hardship people went through in those areas. Smith's vocals have a unique combo of a twang and rasp as well as an earnestness that makes the song that much more compelling.
Described as American Roots music, Smith's music pulls influences from old country, bluegrass, and folk as well as traditional Celtic music. In Dust Bowl, Smith blends in influences from the music made from the traditional instruments brought by farmers along their journey away from the drought-affected areas.
Smith recorded Dust Bowl with a full roster of A-list musicians, including Rob Ickes on Dobro and Lap Steel (Willie Nelson, Dolly Parton, Mary Chapin Carpenter), Jeff Taylor on accordion (Amy Grant, George Strait, Martina McBride), bassist Bill Wittman (Cyndi Lauper), keyboardist Tommy Mandel (Bryan Adams, Dire Straits), violinist Lorenza Ponce (Bon Jovi, Adele, Sam Smith), percussionist Matt Burgess (Willie Nelson, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Jewel), and drummer Skoota Warner(Cyndi Lauper, Santana, Lionel Richie).
