Arcade Fire closed Lollapalooza 2017 with a career-spanning set (and a cover of John Lennon’s “Mind Games”), marking the Canadian collective’s third festival appearance after stops in 2005 and a co-headlining slot in 2010 (not counting a visit to Lolla Brazil in 2014). But the real finale came earlier in the day when Lil Yachty invited a crush of fans to Tito’s smaller stage. Photographers who managed to work their way into the pit had to exit via a ladder to sidestage, the swell of people was so dense. Kids climbed surrounding trees, forcing organizers to call extra security to keep the crowd in check. A cameo from Chance the Rapper, who headlined Saturday, did little to calm the surge.
London Grammar and Sofi Tukker offered more upbeat and less claustrophobic experiences, with the former playing cuts off new album Truth Is a Beautiful Thing and the latter duo launching through their Bossanova flavored catalogue, including sassy single “Fuck They.” Joey Bada$$ rounded out the day with soul and rhymes rooted in his new LP, ALL-AMIERIKKKAN BADA$$.
