Lollapalooza has many enemies—gate-jumping kids, Chicago curfews, Coachella—but no antagonist looms larger than the very heavens above Lake Michigan. Inclement weather has derailed sets in both 2012 and 2015, and that stormy legacy took its biggest casualties yesterday as headliners Lorde and Muse had to evacuate the stage (though Muse snuck three songs in). Liam Gallagher also exited the stage after three songs, albeit he cited throat issues due to a “difficult gig” the night before. (An alternative theory states he took off after seeing an “I Heart Noel” sign in the audience, stoking the fire between him and his former Oasis bandmate/brother.)
The only upside to this buzzkill debut is that the annual festival has expanded to four days, and there is a lot more music to witness from Chance the Rapper, The Killers, Arcade Fire, Run the Jewels, Rae Sremmurd and more. Paste photographer Sarah Hess braved the squalls to provide photos of Cage the Elephant, Jain, The Middle Kids, Spoon, White Reaper, Wiz Khalifa and, in their brief window, Muse. Check back tomorrow for (hopefully) dryer coverage of Lollapalooza 2017.
