With Lollapalooza and Coachella under our belts, San Francisco’s Outside Lands marks the decline of festival season. Appropriately, this year’s lineup feels like a synthesis of the previous three months of music events, pulling and innovating for a nice mix of acts. Lorde, alt-J and A Tribe Called Quest have been some of the most frequent staples, the former headlining almost every major event, but any chance to revisit Tribe at the moment should be treasured—this could well be the last tour for the iconic Queens, New York collective. Gorillaz’ latest parade of guest stars and animated theatrics is as intoxicating as ever. And though their inclusion in alternative rock fests still remains divisive, Metallica has earned the right to play any stage it damn well pleases. The Who serve as the classic rock elder statesmen, and alongside Roger Waters, no archetypal veterans have toured as much and so consistently.
Check out photographer Amy Harris’ coverage of day one, with shots of Gorillaz, alt-J, Tove Lo, Sleigh Bells and more, and come back tomorrow and Monday for more coverage of the groups listed above.
