White smoke was spotted coming out of a chimney at Netflix HQ. (Okay, not a great joke, but better than what Netflix is putting out there right now.) But it turns out that Netflix has found a Pope Francis portrayer in Jonathan Pryce. Pryce, famous for Terry Gilliam’s Brazil, was most recently seen in Game of Thrones as another religious authority, the High Sparrow.
Of course, memelords on the web have long since taken advantage of the resemblance:
Pryce’s Francis will be joined by Sir Anthony Hopkins as his predecessor, Pope Benedict XVI. (Unfortunately, we could not find any fresh hot Benedict/Hannibal Lecter memes.) The Netflix film has some powerful creative forces behind it, including director Fernando Meirelles (City of God) and screenwriter Anthony McCarten (The Theory of Everything, the forthcoming Winston Churchill movie Darkest Hour).
The film will depict (per Deadline) Pope Benedict’s election to the papacy, and his tenure as the leader of the Roman Catholic Church until his surprise resignation, with Pope Francis (somewhat reluctantly) succeeding him. We presume that this film will not end with Pryce’s character horribly incinerated by wildfire in his place of faith.
The Pope will begin filming November in Argentina, the home country of Pope Francis.
