Watch Middle-Earth: Shadow of War‘s Explosive Live-Action Trailer

Nothing will be forgotten in Middle-Earth: Shadow of War, but the forthcoming game’s impressive live-action trailer, embedded above, certainly calls to mind memories of Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit trilogies, which is to say it’s a thrilling, purely cinematic short film.

The Shadow of Mordor sequel’s new trailer was directed by Neil Huxley, who has done VFX work on films including Avatar, Watchmen and Ender’s Game. As The Verge points out, this makes Huxley the first director to helm a live-action Tolkien adaptation since Jackson’s trilogies. “All of what you’re seeing is in camera, apart from dragons and giant trolls and the larger creatures that we obviously can’t pull off practically,” said the director.

Huxley’s film is an impressive accomplishment, but it’s also an engaging interactive experience. The choice you make at the end of the clip—whether its to save your ally or slay your enemy—will direct you to the game’s website and cue up a different video, each with its own branching decision trees (and badass action sequences). Choose wisely.

Shadow of War comes to Xbox One, Xbox One X, PC (via the Windows Store and Steam), Playstation 4 and Playstation 4 Pro on Oct. 10. You can preorder the game here, watch its live-action trailer above, and revisit previous footage here.
