Nintendo’s NES Classic Will Return to Stores in 2018

The Nintendo Entertainment System is back—again. The once-futile struggle of Nintendo fans and toy collectors to obtain the NES Classic just got a little easier, as Nintendo announced today via press release that the retro microconsole will return to store shelves in 2018. This comes with an official confirmation that production for the SNES Classic will ramp up to meet high demand.

The SNES Classic will ship through 2018, reversing Nintendo’s original plan to similarly discontinue the product at the end of the calendar year. In their press release, Nintendo promises that more SNES Classic units will ship on launch day than there were for the NES Classic during its lifespan. Nintendo says, “Fans have shown their unbridled enthusiasm for these Classic Edition systems, so Nintendo is working to put many more of them on store shelves.”

Nintendo did not provide any date specifics for the NES Classic’s return, other than “next summer.” In the meanwhile, prepare yourself mentally and physically in what could be a tumultuous battle for the SNES Classic when it releases on Sept. 29. The SNES Classic will retail for $79.99, while the NES Classic originally sold for $59.99. No word yet on a Virtual Boy Classic.
