Riot Fest has served as punk rock’s genie since 2005, summoning bands who have been retired for decades to play one-time shows and uniting lineups that are pretty damn hard to say no to. Topping last year’s feat—The Misfits incarnation of Danzig, Doyle Wolfgang von Frankenstein and Jerry Only—may seem nigh impossible, but the event coaxed Jawbreaker onto stage this Sunday after 21 years. No small feat. But in all, the 2017 iteration is once again a buffet of early-90s aggro mixtape ecstasy laced with modern greats.
Yesterday ignited on an insidious note, joining industrial prophets Nine Inch Nails and Ministry on the same bill. A Day to Remember, Vic Mensa, Death From Above, Action Bronson, Saul Williams also joined for one of the sweatiest, tinnitus-inducing outdoor music fests before the temperatures plummet. Check out photographer Sarah Hess’ photos from the first day above, and check back tomorrow and Monday for more coverage.
