go sightseeing in New York City in their new video, directed by Jonas Åkerlund, for “You’re the Best Thing About Me,” the first official single off their forthcoming Songs of Experience. The setting is aptly chosen, as it was where the Dublin natives played their first club gig in the U.S. almost 40 years ago.
The song was written as a love letter to Bono’s wife Ali, but when accompanied by the video, it also serves as “a serenade to the city’s iconic symbols of American compassion and liberty.” The band gallivants around the Big Apple, taking in the sights and sounds, and embracing their duties as tourists. With play comes work, however, and work for U2 means performing on a rooftop with the city’s skyline in the background, showing off how much experience they’ve gained since their first performance in the city.
Songs of Experience is set to be released on Dec. 1. Watch the video for “You’re the Best Thing About Me” below, and check out a 1986 performance from the band beneath that, courtesy of the Paste Cloud.
