“Take me as I am,” wails William Patrick Corgan on his new release “The Spaniards”—a track off his forthcoming album Ogilala, out Oct. 13 via BMG. Last month, Corgan shared “Aeronaut,” which is more smashing pianos than pumpkins, though it does deal with natural elements: ether, sun, air, etc. Both tracks were greeted with reception and description eerily similar to Coldplay’s Viva la Vida, solidifying Corgan as a wanderlust kind of guy. If you are, too, you can preorder the album here.
The Pillbox video for “The Spaniards” takes WWII footage and blends it with psychedelic montage, both computerized and not, intended to depict a hero’s journey. What it does well is cross-cultural mishap: A figure at the head of the table is in heavy makeup and wearing a turban. Lest we forget, Corgan isn’t a fan of folks who might take offense to that.
Ogilala promises to be a reclamation of Corgan’s solo career since on-and-off reunions with The Smashing Pumpkins and 2000’s The Future Embrace. As per the title Ogilala, sometimes you truly have no clue what the dude’s saying, and that’s OK.
