Chris Stapleton’s From A Room: Volume 2 received a release date earlier this week, and now the country singer has done us one better, sharing the lead single from his forthcoming album.
“Millionaire,” originally written and recorded by Kevin Welch for his 2002 album of the same name, is a classic love song through and through: “They say love is more precious than gold / It can’t be bought and it can’t be sold,” Stapleton sings in its opening lines. It’s one thing to retread a familiar old idea and say that it’s new; it’s entirely another to tap into something timeless. Stapleton’s take on “Millionaire,” like Welch’s before it, accomplishes the latter, with lovely backing vocals from his wife Morgane Stapleton and polished instrumentation.
Stapleton released From A Room, Volume 1 in May, the follow-up to his 2015 breakthrough record Traveller. From A Room, Volume 1 captured “all of the good qualities that propelled Stapleton into the spotlight and solidifie[d] his place at the forefront of current male country artists,” as Ben Salmon wrote in his review for Paste. The next episode stands to follow suit.
