Michael B. Jordan to Executive Produce, Star in Superhero Netflix Series

We’re noticing a pattern here with actor Michael B. Jordan (Creed) and superheroes. One of Jordan’s earliest hits was Josh Trank’s Chronicle, in which Jordan receives mysterious powers, followed by his performance as the Human Torch in Trank’s enormously disappointing follow-up, Fantastic Four. Like previous Human Torch Chris Evans, Jordan jumped ship to the Marvel Cinematic Universe for Black Panther. But Jordan’s latest superhero foray will be Raising Dion, a Netflix series that Jordan will executive produce and star in. The one-hour, sci-fi family drama will get 10 episodes to start.

Raising Dion will be based on the short film and comic of the same name, both created by Dennis Liu. The story focuses on a single mother named Nicole Reese, whose young son begins to manifest mysterious and magical abilities. It doesn’t look like Jordan will have any powers here, as he will play the role of Nicole’s deceased husband, Mark.

Liu, who will also serve as an executive producer with Jordan and showrunner Carol Barbee (UnREAL), released the following statement:

“I started this project many years ago because I wanted to see more diverse representation on film and television and I’m excited to partner with Netflix and MACRO, who I know shares that commitment. More than ever, we need more stories told from different points of view and my hope with Raising Dion is to create a cinematic experience for all families that will lift your spirits and make you laugh and cry.”

Jordan will also star in an HBO adaptation of Fahrenheit 451 alongside Michael Shannon. You can see Jordan on the big screen again as the villainous Erik Killmonger in Ryan Coogler’s (Fruitvale Station, Creed) Black Panther on Feb. 16, 2018. Coogler and Jordan will (unsurprisingly) re-team a forth time for Wrong Answer.
