Premiere: Tricky and Breanna Barbara Join Forces on "When We Die"

British trip-hop pioneer Tricky returned last month with ununiform, his 13th studio album and fourth on his own False Idols imprint. The last song on the album, “When We Die,” sports a creeping beat, swelling synths and deceptively positive lyrics from the star, with longtime collaborator Martina Topley-Bird adding a sultry vocal to the choruses.

ununiform was conceived in Moscow and completed in Berlin, where Tricky has been living for the past three years “I don’t know anybody,” he said. “I eat good food. I go for walks”.

Today, in a Paste exclusive, Tricky has released a new version of the song featuring New York-based singer/guitarist Breanna Barbara, who will join him on his upcoming tour of the U.S. and Canada. Barbara reworked the song with her signature reverb-drenched sound, performing it with a live band, sampling in Tricky’s vocals, and adding her take on Topley-Bird’s part. “Breanna really is a unique talent and brings her own vibe to this song,” Tricky said.

“We recorded it out on Rockaway Beach, Queens with Ben Trimble (co-producer/ keys), Charles Garmendia (drums) and Jay Heislemen (guitar),” said Barbara, who is based in Queens. “We wanted to capture the floating, limbo-like space where ‘When We Die’ left us. Rockaway Beach was perfect setting to ask that ageless question, ‘Where do we go when we die?’”
