Introducing Thundercat’s Samurai Sequel Video, “Show Me the Way”

Spoiler alert: the video for “Show Me the Way” (a single off of Thundercat’s latest, Drunk) is sublime, with a funny mouth-feel.

Directed by Katarzyna Sawicka and Carlos Lopez Estrada, the video follows the same wounded samurai’s journey as in the video for “Them Changes”—we recommend watching that video first if you haven’t already. Otherwise, you’ll see an armless man in an all-natural wellness center in a near-paradise and wonder why there’s a white clad attendant slapping a mysterious substance out of him, why the man sits on a dock, why the fruity drink and why he’s watching a telecast version of the angelic Thundercat, Kenny Loggins and Michael McDonald playing “Show Me the Way” against a backdrop of clouds.

On second thought, “brush your teeth / go to sleep” (as Thundercat commands on “Captain Stupido,” the first track off Drunk), because you may be confused anyway.

“We got the track from Thundercat and quickly realized that we had a unique opportunity to continue the story that we had started with ‘Them Changes,’” Sawicka and Estrada note. “We ended that video on a fairly grim note but ‘Show You The Way’ offered a bright and contrasting soundtrack for a sequel of redemption.”

The Grammy-winning bassist and producer isn’t in need of redemption yet, as he’s found his wings: The Red Bull Music Academy Daily will release an album track-by-track from an interview between Thundercat and RBMA co-founder Torsten Schmidt. He’ll play at the Red Bull Music Academy Festival in L.A. this Saturday with Flying Lotus.
