Watch The Front Bottoms Play New Songs Live at Paste

Brian Sella and Matt Uychich, the founding members of pop-punk outfit The Front Bottoms, are all grown up. After more than a decade of collaboration and three LPs, the New Jersey natives are back with their latest album, Going Grey. They visited Paste Studios to play acoustic versions of the new songs and discuss how things have changed as they’ve matured. They opened with “Vacation Town”, a song that directly confronts the complications that come with age. Sella explained the meaning lying behind the song, and the album as a whole, saying, “It’s that whole vibe of growing up and having to put the suit and tie on, but also having time to take bong rips and drink a million beers.”

The concept of coming of age helped inform the title of the album, which was actually inspired by a backhanded insult from Sella’s mother: She subtly gave him hair dye, with a warning that she started going grey in her 20s. “She said, ‘You can only grey once,’” Sella noted wryly before quipping, “I didn’t use the hair dye, and I don’t think I’m going to.” Check out another track from Going Grey, “Peace Sign.”

Fans of The Front Bottoms will note that their new work still heavily features trademarks of the old: dry humor, nostalgia, and a casualness that renders the listening experience akin to hearing music written by old friends. Part of that familiarity is rooted in the long friendship between Sella and Uychich, as well as their tendency to welcome other pals to join the group. Sella explained that not much has changed over the course of their career, observing, “The whole band, at the beginning, was just an excuse to hang out with our friends. It’s still sort of like that, just hanging around, farting around.” Listen to The Front Bottoms fart around with closing track “Don’t Fill Up on Chips.” The band is currently on tour in the U.S. Find dates below.
