Warner Bros. Orders Harley Quinn "Adult" Animated Series

Batman villain Harley Quinn is returning to her animated roots. Since her debut in Batman: The Animated Series in the 1990s, the Joker’s main squeeze has made her way into the comics canon and made her big-screen debut in Suicide Squad, portrayed by Margot Robbie. Per Deadline, a new “adult” animated series is in the works starring the character.

The project comes from Justin Halpern, Patrick Schumacker and Dean Lorey, executive producers of the canceled DC TV comedy Powerless. Warner Bros. has Robbie at the top of their wish list for the voice of Quinn, but there’s no official word yet on casting. The show is reported to feature Poison Ivy, and various heroes and villains from DC lore, and will be about a post-Joker Harley Quinn trying to make it by herself as “the criminal Queenpin of Gotham City.”

This show will be the first original animated series for a new DC digital platform, joined by a live-actions Titans show from from Greg Berlanti, Akiva Goldsman, Geoff Johns and Sarah Schechter, and a revival of the cult classic animated show Young Justice. Per the DC Comics blog, the above image is “development art” for the show that may not be reflective of its final look.

Robbie is set for her own spin-off film with Jared Leto’s Joker, but has yet to be confirmed for the sequel to Suicide Squad or David Ayer’s apparently dormant Gotham City Sirens project.
