Jameson Has Created an Irish Whiskey Aged in IPA Beer Barrels

Is your ideal boilermaker a shot of Irish whiskey and a pint of IPA? Well, Jameson has created something that may appeal to you, then.

The Irish whiskey giant has announced the second release in its “Caskmates” series, Jameson Caskmates IPA Edition. Following a release where Jameson Irish Whiskey was aged in barrels that previously contained an Irish stout, this version has been aged in barrels that previously contained an Irish craft brewery’s IPA, which Jameson claims has imparted the final product with a “hoppy finish” and “crisp citrus notes.”

Oddly, the company’s press release seems to go out of its way to not note the collaborating brewery, but it does note the name of the brewer as Shane Long. Seeing as a man with the same name founded Cork’s Franciscan Well Brewery, that seems like a good bet as to the source of the IPA. To quote the press release’s description of the process involved:

Starting with barrels from the Midleton distillery, the local Irish brewery receives the propriety oak whiskey barrels to be filled with their local craft IPA. Once the IPA has imparted its crisp citrus notes, the barrels are sent back to Jameson to be reused to finish Jameson Original, creating Jameson Caskmates IPA Edition. As a result of time spent in the IPA barrels, Jameson Caskmates IPA Edition enhances the smooth taste of Jameson with a crisp, hoppy finish.

Jameson Caskmates IPA Edition is 80 proof (40% ABV), the same as the standard Jameson, and carries an MSRP of $29.99. It will be available “at retail locations and neighborhood bars nationwide.” You can check out the full label below.
