The National’s new video for “Dark Side of the Gym” takes the title pretty literally, but the band enlists some decorated personnel to contribute a little whimsy to the visual. NYC Ballet’s Justin Peck directs, choreographs and stars in the video alongside former Miami City Ballet mentor and principal dancer Patricia Delgado. Together, they dance around a dimly lit gymnasium on a balloon-covered floor.
Their fluid motions mimic the mellow nature of the song, as Matt Berninger sings, “I’m going to keep you in love with me, for a while.” The dancers’ chemistry is undeniable, making the song sound twice as sweet and intimate as it already is. At the end of the dance, however, Peck leaves the gym while Delgado watches him longingly.
