“Bang, bang, blammo!” or so Ty Segall and co. write on Bandcamp, where the prolific rocker has released a new song called “The Main Pretender” (also available on iTunes). We’ve included the track below but not the full description, in which Segall says the song “aims to cull the herd by focusing its sights on a greatest common multiple of our society—people who just can’t see the forest for the head up their ass!”
There are many of these pretenders out there, Segall and longtime collaborator Mikal Cronin apparently included—they don’t take themselves too seriously. The descriptions of the song include “alto sax lick and a roiling bass line … bounces like rubber and sticks like glue.” Yet nothing will be as “urbane and sophisticated” as Cronin’s sax on Segall’s most recent “My Lady’s On Fire.” Over the past couple of months, Ty has also released “Alta” and “Meaning,” all with one-shade color covers. What could it all mean?
This one is for all you pretenders, who could “get free and reach for something outside of [yourself],” or cave and check out Ty’s tour dates on the West Coast and in Mexico. Back in August, Ty released the Fried Shallots EP: a benefit for the ACLU that we found, in a word, “crunchy.” His 2017 self-titled solo record also landed at No. 32 on our 50 Best Albums of 2017 list, which came out today. Check it out!
