Amazon’s “Indie for the Holidays” playlist tapped the likes of Albert Hammond, Jr., Kevin Morby, Best Coast and others to bring the holiday cheer by putting their own spin on yuletide classics, as well as more modern compositions. Included in the mix is roots rocker Jessica Lea Mayfield, who contributed her cover of Loretta Lynn’s “To Heck With Ole Santa Claus.”
Mayfield turns down the flame on Lynn’s rollicking 1966 anti-Christmas composition and lets her sultry vocals simmer over an ambling, downcast bassline as she plots her revenge against St. Nick for not bringing her a gift. In the video, Mayfield recruits others who also have a bone to pick and devise a plan to rally against his corruption. Nothing says “to heck with Ole Santa Claus” like blowing up his cookies.
“I love Christmas so much and was super excited to get to record a song for ‘Indie For The Holidays,’” said Mayfield in a statement. “I’ve been hearing my mom sing this song my whole life—the original version is a lot more upbeat. I felt Christopher Good’s video treatment for this version was perfect.”
