Cody Simpson & The Tide released their Wave One EP in September, and the West Coast rockers are carrying that momentum into 2018: The band has shared a wonderful new live video for Wave One cut “Tell Me Why,” which you can watch exclusively at Paste.
The video finds the Australian-born pop star and his Venice Beach-based band clustered together in a cluttered performance space, seated on stools and equipped with acoustic instruments. Simpson’s preternatural talents practically burst through the screen as he performs, particularly as the effortlessly infectious song builds to its fast-paced crescendo. “Tell me why, tell me why / you ain’t livin’ but you do not die,” Simpson sings, more than capably accompanied by Adrian Cota’s soft but steady percussion and Shareef Addo’s nimble bass playing.
“This version of ‘Tell Me Why’ showcases a vibe very similar to how the song was originally written: jamming, spitting out soulful spontaneous lyrics and melodies,” Simpson tells Paste. Indeed, the video captures the inimitable energy of the creative process, bottling the lightning that is carefree, confident music-making.
Wave One is aptly named—the EP ebbs and flows between breezy beach ballads (“Waiting for the Tide”), anthemic indie-pop (“Sun Go Down”) and upbeat surf-rock (“Ramona”), all of which is utterly hook-laden. Simpson and Southern California go together wonderfully, and we can’t wait to see where he and The Tide go next.
