Hinds Return With "New For You," Sunny First Single From Their Second Album

Two years removed from their breakout debut Leave Me Alone, 2014 Best of What’s Next picks Hinds have announced their long-awaited second record. I Don’t Run is out April 6 via Mom + Pop, and per a press release, the album “shows a bigger, better, faster, funnier, more dexterous Hinds.” Sign us right up.

The new and improved Hinds are in full force on “New For You,” the lead single with a video that finds the Madrid-based band tearing up the fútbol field. “Sometimes I see myself and I can’t stand my show!” guitarist and vocalist Carlotta Cosials (who also directed the clip) admits, swearing to be her best self in the infectious, affectionate chorus. The song’s surf-rock guitars and raucous group vocals strike a balance between Hinds’ past and future, revealing a band for whom growing is no pain.

I Don’t Run finds Hinds, like many of their contemporaries, facing hard truths head-on. Though they recognize listeners may expect a carefree, celebratory sort of album, a la Leave Me Alone, “we’re not satisfied with that,” says guitarist and vocalist Ana Perrote. “On this album the struggles are clear. We want to be brave.” Part of that bravery is in Hinds facing how much they’ve grown since 2014, traveling the world on the strength of their debut and bonding through ups and downs all the while. “If you’re looking for mistakes Hinds is your band,” says Cosials. “We make mistakes but we really are proud of what we have and we wanna prove the doubters wrong.”

The band’s new album was co-produced by Hinds and Gordon Raphael (The Strokes, Regina Spektor), with engineering from Shawn Everett (Alabama Shakes, Perfume Genius, The War On Drugs, John Legend). They began writing their new material in Madrid in April 2017 after an extended period of constant touring. And despite the long shadow of Leave Me Alone, which we highlighted as one of 2016’s best albums, a sophomore slump is the furthest thing from Hinds’ collective mind: “We loved making this album,” says Perrote. “We knew what we wanted and we have what we wanted. This is a new start for us and we’re fucking ready.”

Speaking of constant touring, Hinds have also unveiled a spring tour, which kicks off with a string of U.S. dates in March, spreads to the U.K. and Europe in April, and then returns Stateside for more shows in May. Tickets for all their U.S. dates go on sale Jan. 26 at 10 a.m. EST—you can grab yours right here.
