Golden Globe and SAG winner Idris Elba has returned to his native England to begin production on the four-part fifth installment of BBC America’s Luther.
announced Thursday that the new season will include a new character, D.S. Catherine Halliday, played by BAFTA winner Wunmi Mosaku. Halliday will join Luther in untangling the mystery of a new monstrous nightmare, a brilliantly audacious killer.
However, as Luther comes closer and closer to uncovering the truth of the horror, he must also face the ghosts of his past—he will have to decide who to protect and who to sacrifice. No matter his next move, it will have catastrophic consequences on himself and those around him. This season will change Luther forever.
Elba said of shooting the fifth season in a statement, “It’s good to be back in London, back in the coat.” Luther creator Neil Cross said that he “wanted to make the biggest, scariest, darkest, most thrilling series of Luther there’s ever been. So that’s what we’ve come back to do.”
President Sarah Barnett added, “Luther never fails to deliver a punch with its powerful dialogue, wrenchingly dark and beautiful storylines, and incomparable performances. There’s a charisma to this show that is rare, all credit to Neil Cross, Idris Elba and the talented team.”
You can catch Elba in Aaron Sorkin’s Molly’s Game with Jessica Chastain, in theaters now. Check out a quick video from the first day on set with Elba below.
