Superstar rapper Kendrick Lamar and Anthony “Top Dawg” Tiffith are set to curate and produce the original score for the new Marvel movie Black Panther.
This collaboration represents the first time in Marvel Cinematic Universe history where Marvel will incorporate multiple original recordings created specifically for a film. This will also represent the first time Lamar will write, produce and curate music for a major motion picture.
The album associated with the movie will be called Black Panther: The Album and will include new track “All The Stars,” featuring Lamar and his label mate SZA, whom we named the best new artist of 2017. Critically acclaimed filmmaker Ryan Coogler (director of Black Panther) is said to have hand-picked Lamar for this first film collaboration. Coogler said in a statement, “I am honored to be working with such an incredible artist whose work has been so inspirational, and whose artistic themes align with those we explore in the film. I can’t wait for the world to hear what Kendrick and TDE have in store.”
Lamar added, “Marvel Studios’ Black Panther is amazing, from its cast to its director. The magnitude of this film showcases a great marriage of art and culture. I’m truly honored to contribute my knowledge of producing sound and writing music alongside Ryan and Marvel’s vision.”
The film, which stars Chadwick Boseman, Michael B. Jordan and Oscar winner Lupita Nyong’o, among others, follows the story of T’Challa who, after the death of his father, returns to the technologically advanced African nation of Wakanda to take his rightful place as king.
opens in theaters Feb. 16, 2018. Listen to Lamar and SZA’s “All The Stars” below.
