Machine Gun Kelly Cast as Tommy Lee in Motley Crue Biopic

Pop-rapper Colson Baker, better known by his stage name, Machine Gun Kelly, has been cast to play Motley Crue’s drummer, Tommy Lee, in Netflix’s biopic The Dirt, per Variety. MGK confirmed the news over Twitter on Thursday, showing his excitement by tweeting, “excuse me for being crass but … Holy fucking shit!”

IMDb describes The Dirt as the story of how Motley Crue came to be one of the most notorious rock bands of the 1980s. The biopic has been in the works for over a decade, jumping around from studio to studio until originally landing with director Larry Charles for Paramount and MTV Films in 2006. With Netflix now taking charge of the film, The Dirt is closer to development than ever before.

Signing on to the film is director for the Jackass franchise, Jeff Tremaine, a long-time fan of Motley Crue’s and an expression of the rock-star persona himself. The script is being written by Rick Wilkes and Californication creator Tom Kapinos, taken from the New York Times best-selling book The Dirt: Confessions of the World’s Most Notorious Rock Band, written by Motley Crue members Tommy Lee, Vince Neil, Mick Mars and Nicki Sixx with author Neil Strauss. Motley Crue fans will be happy to know that band members Lee, Mars and Neil will also serve as executive producers on the biopic.

Fans can expect from the film a provocative story of the band’s escapades through their rise to fame in the ‘80s. Drugs, high heels, women and rock ‘n’ roll are all things that come to mind when thinking about the Crue and ‘80s heavy metal. As of now, there is still no word on who will play Vince Neil or Nicki Sixx. MGK seems to already be getting prepared for the film, saying on Twitter that his untitled fourth album will finish before the start of the film and that his brother has been hired to teach him how to drum.

Translating such a huge story into film is going to be a challenge to say the least. We can only hope that the film will do the band justice in capturing their once-in-a-lifetime experiences. With the band’s members set to produce, and the casting of MGK as Tommy Lee, it seems that Netflix is on the right track.

The Dirt is currently pre-production, with no announcement as of yet about when filming will begin. Read Paste’s 2016 interview with Machine Gun Kelly here, and watch a 1987 Motley Crue performance of “Home Sweet Home” from the Paste Cloud below.
