Soccer Mommy Announces Debut Album, Clean

A wonderful day for new music has one more gift to give us, as 20-year old Nashville native Sophie Allison has announced her debut album as Soccer Mommy. Clean is due out via Fat Possum on March 2, and you can listen to the outstanding lead single now.

A press release describes Clean as “Allison’s journey out of her bedroom and into the studio,” as well as “an emotional album, heavy on themes of growth, isolation and change.” The 10-track album was produced by Gabe Wax (War On Drugs, Deerhunter, Beirut) and mixed by Ali Chant (Perfume Genius, PJ Harvey), and follows Allison’s 2017 EP Collection.

“I’d never made a full album before, just EPs and random tracks thrown together,” Allison explained in a statement. “I wanted it to be a lot more cohesive than the rest of the stuff that came before. I wanted to make something that was a full piece of my life, that addressed similar themes and held together as a whole.”

Our first taste of Soccer Mommy’s debut comes in the form of ferocious lead single “Your Dog,” accompanied by an unsettling, Weird Life-directed music video. “The song comes from a feeling of being paralyzed in a relationship to the point where you feel like you are a pawn in someone else’s world,” Allison said. “The song and the video are meant to show someone breaking away and taking action, but at the same time, it’s only a quick burst of motivation. It’s a moment of strength amidst a long period of weakness.”

We highlighted Soccer Mommy as The Best of What’s Next last August—Nina Corcoran wrote, “What separates [Allison] from the rest, however, is her phrasing, the way she shapes musical sequences to show emotion.” That knack is on full display in “Your Dog,” which pairs hypnotic indie-pop with an uncompromising demand for respect—”I don’t want to be your fucking dog,” Allison sings to start the song, asserting her agency in no uncertain terms.

Next month, Soccer Mommy and her band head out on tour with another rising indie-rock star, Phoebe Bridgers. You can see those dates below, and find ticket info here.
