The Israeli graffiti collective Broken Fingaz Crew have collaborated with Irish rockers U2 to create the animated music video for the band’s single “Get Out Of Your Own Way,” off their 2017 album Songs of Experience.

Known only by their creative monikers so as to disguise their identities, Broken Fingaz Crew is made up of Unga, Tant, Kip and Desco. The Crew previously collaborated with the band on their lyric video for “American Soul.” When Broken Fingaz approached the band with the concept for today’s new video, U2 gave them complete creative control.

The video begins in a stop-motion urban landscape as the camera zooms into the room of a lonely woman staring out her window. The video’s themes speak against the division in the country and the president’s inability to act, as scenes of KKK members appear under a rainbow night sky and walk in front of the Oval Office. Broken Fingaz speak to how normal hate has become as the KKK ride the bus and go home to their wives without opposition. The next scene encourages us to fight back, with the animation tying in perfectly with U2’s socio-political message as Lady Liberty’s face cracks over Bono’s lyrics: “She had a plan until she got a smack in the mouth … ”

Broken Fingaz Crew described the mission statement of their “Get Out Of Your Own Way” music video as follows:

The video addresses the current political situation: 2017 for us was the year fascists worldwide felt confident enough to raise their heads again, encouraged by Trump and other world leaders, who use people’s fear to build more walls and segregation.

The song is both a personal letter and a clarion cry to the global situation, and in the same way, we’ve combined our psychedelic pop style with political imagery; shot entirely analogue, using paper cut and stop motion animation techniques in collaboration with Adam Albo, who edited the video.
